Remote Certification Testing

In consideration of the current COVID-19 pandemic, and many schools being closed the remainder of the current school year, REC Foundation will temporarily provide the following remote or home testing opportunity through June 30, 2020. The link below takes you to the full Remote Certification Testing document. This document includes a mandatory "Remote/Home Testing Form" that is submitted to Certifications@RoboticsEducation.org upon completion of the testing.

Schools must check with their local, state, and Department of Education authorities with regards to the allowance of remote or home testing for Industry Certifications.


Pre-Engineering and Robotics Industry Certifications

The REC Foundation provides two industry certifications (Pre-Engineering and Robotics) for schools, students in engineering related programs, and robotics clubs. These certifications were designed by a team of accomplished professionals composed of engineers, college professors, and high school teachers.
The REC Foundation Certifications Program is a response to a global need for more students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Modules

Certifications are divided into a Fundamentals of Engineering section and eight engineering area modules.

Curriculum Suggestions

The REC Foundation does not require curriculum to successfully complete the exams. Whereas the REC Foundation does not require curriculum, the following resources are available for teachers to consider.

VEX V5 STEM Labs (free) – VEX V5 STEM Labs include Over 65 hours of instruction (13 lessons) on topics including Math, Science, Engineering, and Programming. All the lessons include Objectives, Materials and Standards as well as necessary teacher lesson plans for the classroom.

Project Lead The Way (Registration and Training costs vary) – PLTW Engineering curriculum is broken into year-long classes with national standards, lesson plans and all digital resources included in the school registration. All the RECF Certification standards are found in the PLTW curriculum resources.

NASA (free) – Find resources to support your STEM curriculum, professional development opportunities to expand your knowledge base, contests to engage your students and more!

Certification Scoring Examples

1) Albert Einstein makes an 82% score on the Fundamentals of Engineering, which earns him 55 points. Albert scores a 92% on the Electrical module and earns 15 points. He also scores a 78% on Chemical, which earns 5 points

Albert earns a Pre-Engineering certification with emphasis in Electrical and Chemical.
2) Henry Ford scores a 92% on the Fundamentals of Engineering, he earns 60 points. Henry scores 91% on the Mechanical module and earns 15 points. He also scores a 61% on Aerospace and earns no points:

While Henry has 75 points, he did not pass the minimum two modules and therefore receives no certification. Henry can retake the Aerospace module or take a different module in order to earn his certification.
3) Isaac Asimov scores an 84% on the Fundamentals of Engineering, he earns 55 points. Isaac scores 91% on the Mechanical module and earns 15 points. He also scores 86% on Electrical, earning 10 points. He scores 89% on Programming, earning 10 points:

Isaac earns a Pre-Engineering Certification and a Robotics Certification with an emphasis in Electrical, Programming, and Mechanical.

Earning Certification

Students must pass Fundamentals of Engineering plus a minimum of two out of the eight engineering modules in order to receive the REC Foundation Pre-Engineering Certification. To earn the Robotics Certification, students must also pass the Fundamentals of Engineering and three modules in Computer Science/Programming, Electrical, and Mechanical. Because they exceed the two required modules, students who earn the Robotics Certification also earn the Pre-Engineering Certification. There is no limit to how many engineering modules a student may take beyond the ones required.
The minimum combined score required to earn a Pre-Engineering Certification is 70 Points from the Fundamentals of Engineering module and two of engineering modules. The minimum combined score required to earn a Pre-Engineering & Robotics Certification is 80 Points from the Fundamentals of Engineering test and the Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science engineering modules. All students passing the certification will receive a certificate documenting their achievement.
